A students perspective on julians Class

I have known Julian in a professional and personal capacity for many years now. Throughout this time I have seen him develop a unique and creative style of teaching with an emphasis on body connection and injury prevention. Julian aims to empower students with knowledge, encouraging them to understand the physical journey they are on and to be aware of hat is happening within the body. he does not believe that it is enough to be able to complete the pose- you must understand how you got there and be able to come away from it with safety and awareness.
Julians style of teaching is strong yet compassionate, he likes to push his students but only within their individual physical boundaries. He encourages people to be their own teacher and to learn to find "their point". By pushing yourself too far you risk injury but by not pushing far enough you stay within your comfort zone and limit your discoveries.
Julians classes are always unique. He does not follow a prescribed routine but prefers to be led by his imagination. he tailors his class to his students and teaches whoever is in front of him based on their needs and capabilities. Recently Julian has been working a lot in the area of rehabilitation and has discovered a special skill for teaching those with injuries or significant physical limitations. He has developed a range of movements that are specially designed to create a flow of energy to these 'blocked' parts of the body.

The foundation of Julians philosophy is that yoga should teach you strength, flexibility and balance in perfect harmony. Most of us excel at only one or two of these and must therefore focus on the part of the equation that is lacking. It is no good being highly flexible if you do not have the strength to back it up, and vice-versa. By teaching from this perspective, students are encouraged to target their weaknesses, in order to create a balanced and liberating yoga practice.
There is also a strong emphasis on the breath as the foundation to all yoga. the breath is what connects us to our bodies and what liberates us from our minds. For students wanting to experience the deeper aspects of the breath Julian teaches pranayama and meditation classes where a myriad of breathing techniques are explored.
Julian teaches his students to incorporate what they learn in the yoga room into the outside world. He believes that this fundamentally why we practice yoga. Yoga makes us confront our weaknesses, our fears, our limitations. By facing these challenges in the yoga room, we are prepared for when we face them in our lives. By giving this gift of of self knowledge to his students, he enriches their lives on more than just the physical level. I have witnessed this in the deep and loving connection he shares with his long term students and the positive energy that he spreads throughout the school.

What is Yoga? Benefits of yoga

Yoga is a centuries old discipline which offers a path to total health and well-being. Built on a foundation of ethics and personal discipline, it is one of the most sublime tools yet conceived for the experience of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.
Yoga includes a system of physical (asanas) which cover an enormous range of body movement. The postures have an enervating effect on the mind, and thus, an enormous impact on the whole personality.
Following the asanas, powerful breathing techniques are then incorporated which further integrate the psychological and physiological processes.
Alongside these practices, meditation is performed to further still the mind, so as to experience the ultimate inner peace.

Yoga is a safe, regenerative form of exercises which builds a firm foundation for spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health.
Yoga increases our flexibility, endurance, stamina, sense of balance, aerobic capacity, concentration and mental clarity to a remarkable degree. We sleep better and are less affected by the stresses surrounding us. we are assisted in taking responsibility for our own well-being.
Continued practice leads to poise, self-confidence, awareness of one's capabilities and a more positive self-image.
There is no age limit to improvement: thus unlike many other physical activities, Yoga is not merely for the young and supple.

About Julian and the Eastern Suburbs Yoga Centre

The Eastern Suburbs Centre was established in 1985 by Dianne Curry, Julians first and only yoga teacher and to whom he's very thankful for inspiring and causing him to fall in love with yoga.
In the early years Julians practice was strongly influenced by a small group of yogis, including Dianne, Eileen Hall, Robert Lucas, Richard Weinberg and Jimmy. Their dedication was beautiful to watch and was an overriding factor for him in becoming a keen practitioner and eventually a yoga teacher. To them he says 'a very special thanks'.
Julian acknowledges the great yoga masters, especially B.K.S Iyengar and Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, who have contributed so much to what yoga is today and whose styles are deeply rooted in his psyche.
His practice has evolved over twenty years into a very individual one, in an attempt to maintain his teaching fresh and creative. His passion has not dwindled over this period and he looks towards his yoga day as if it was his first.

"Yoga poses should never become boring, they are constantly evolving, hence one should be challenged every time one's feet step on the yoga mat. Be physically alert, mentally present but calm, emotionally focused with the everpresent breath overlooking the whole process. Yoga without being consciously aware of the breath is not yoga."
Julian feels the inner smile technique helps the practitioner let go of the physical rigidity, softens the mind and allows the breath to become the vessel to understanding the different levels of the pose.

Yoga is a gradual process don't rush it.

The school is very happy to acknowledge that for many years it has had the support of a dedicated group of caring and loyal teachers who have greatly contributed to its very positive and calming energy.
Come and enjoy, Namaste.
